THE HERITAGE OF THE BRITISH SKIES

When I found them, they took my breath away. In the backyard of the Crowne Plaza Liverpool John Lennon Airport Hotel—which means on the tarmac of the old Liverpool Airport called Speke Aerodrome—I found several British birds preserved. These historic aircraft are taken care of by the volunteer group Speke Aerodrome Heritage Group. This one sitting in front of the terminal building is the Percival P.50 Prince 3E, a post-war lightweight transporter developed by Percival Aircraft. Percival later became Hunting Aircraft, and it was eventually taken over by the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC).

目にした瞬間、息をのんだ。クラウンプラザ リバプール ジョンレノンエアポートホテルのバックヤード、つまり旧リバプール空港であるスピーク飛行場のターマックの上に英国の名機たちが並んでいたので。ここにある歴史的な航空機は、スピーク飛行場ヘリテージグループというボランティアグループによって保存、維持されているらしい。ターミナルビルの前にいるのは、パーシヴァルエアクラフトが戦後に作った軽輸送機、パーシヴァル P.50 プリンス3E。パーシヴァル社はのちにハンティングエアクラフトになり、その後ブリティッシュ・エアクラフト・コーポレーション(BAC)に統合された。

なじみのある丸窓。これはブリティッシュ・エアロスペースのジェットストリーム 41。その昔、ユナイテッドエクスプレスが運航するフィーダーサービスでJFKからダレスまで飛んだときに乗ったのがこの機種だった。

A real treasure—the airframe of the Bristol Type 175 Britannia. This model was originally built for passengers and was later converted to a freighter.

これは相当なお宝。ブリストル タイプ175 ブリタニアの機体。ここにあるのは、もともと旅客型として作られたブリタニアをのちにフレイターにコンバートしたものらしい。

The masterpiece of post-war British airliners, and the rival of the NAMC YS-11 with the same Rolls-Royce Dart engines—the Avro (later Hawker Siddeley, then BAe) 748. What they have here is one of the original Series 1 748s. When I was a university student, I flew round-trip on the 748 from Christchurch to Queenstown, making a stop at Mount Cook Airport. The flight was operated by the now-defunct Mount Cook Airlines. The landing into a small aerodrome in a mountain valley on the classic turboprop was a fabulous experience. Mount Cook Airport no longer has regular passenger service, and Christchurch and Queenstown are now connected by the Air New Zealand A320 and ATR.

戦後の英国エアライナーの傑作であり、同じロールスロイス・ダートエンジンを積む日本航空機製造YS-11のライバルであるアブロ（ホーカーシドレーやBAeと呼ばれることもある）748。ここに置かれているのは748のオリジナルモデル、シリーズ1の一機。大学生の頃、今はなきマウントクック航空が運航する748に乗り、クライストチャーチからマウントクック空港でワンストップしてクイーンズタウンまで往復したことがある。クラシックなターボプロップで山あいの谷に作られた小さな飛行場に降りていくのは最高の体験だった。現在マウントクック空港に旅客定期便はなく、クライストチャーチとクイーンズタウン間はNZのA320とATRが結んでいる。
