SIXTEEN YEARS LATER

Back in 2008–2009, I supported Maha Harada—one of Japan’s most renowned novelists—in writing her aviation-themed novel Tsubasa wo Kudasai—Freedom in the Sky, offering insights from an aviation expert’s point of view. The story is based on the true story of the Nippon-Go—an aircraft built in Japan that flew around the world in 1939—and a lost American hero of the sky. Sixteen years later, Tsubasa wo Kudasai has been reissued by Mainichi Newspaper Publishing as a new paperback edition, featuring a slightly updated ending that reflects the world of the 2020s. For this new release, I was honored to contribute an afterword. It feels like coming full circle after sixteen years. The paperback is now available at major bookstores across Japan and on Amazon.

その昔、2008年から2009年にかけて、大人気作家である原田マハさんによる航空をテーマにした小説「翼をください~Freedom in the Sky」の執筆を、航空のエキスパートとしてお手伝いさせてもらった。この小説は1939年に世界一周飛行をした日本製の航空機「ニッポン号」と、忽然といなくなったアメリカの空の英雄という2つの史実をベースにしている。それから16年がたち、2020年代の世界に合わせて少々改定された新しいエンディングとともに、新装版「翼をください」の文庫が毎日新聞出版から再発刊された。光栄なことに、新装版の巻末についた解説は僕が書かせてもらっている。16年の時を経て、こうして再び物語とつながることができたのはとてもうれしい。新装版はただいま日本全国の主要書店やAmazonで販売中。
