LUNCH AT HOTEL CONTINENTAL SAIGON

Hotel Continental Saigon, one of the most iconic hotels in Saigon, opened in 1880, stands on the street corner facing the Opera House, adjacent to the Park Hyatt. In its geographical relationship to the Opera House, it occupies the same position as the InterContinental Paris Le Grand, home to Café de la Paix, in Paris. It now even has Opera metro station next to it, just like its counterpart in the capital of the former colonial ruler. Instead of the renowned Parisian café, this hotel has Le Bourgeois Restaurant (of course, a French name), and I enjoyed a typical Vietnamese set-menu lunch there. Hotel Continental Saigon is currently run by a state-owned company, and you might feel that kind of atmosphere once you step inside.

1880年に開業したサイゴンで最もアイコニックなホテルの一つ、ホテルコンチネンタル・サイゴンはパークハイアットのお隣、オペラ座の広場の角にある。オペラ座との位置関係をパリにたとえると、カフェ・ド・ラ・ぺが入ったインターコンチネンタル・パリ・ル・グランの場所にあたる。しかも最近、横にメトロのオペラ駅ができたので、旧宗主国の首都のル・グランにまた一歩近づいている。伝説的なパリのカフェの代わりにこのホテルはル・ブルジョワ（当然、フランス語の店名）というレストランを持っていて、今日はそこで典型的なベトナム式セットミールランチを楽しんだ。ここは国営企業が運営しているらしいが、館内に入るとなんとなくその気配が感じられる。
