HCMC METRO LINE 1

Doing a tasting of the Ho Chi Minh City Metro, Vietnam’s first underground metro line, inaugurated in 2024. A city-wide metro network is planned, but so far only Line 1 has opened. The construction was funded through official development assistance provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and carried out by a Japanese engineering consulting company. The EMUs were also built by Hitachi in Japan. So everything feels familiar, as if I’m riding a different version of the Japanese metro.

2024年に開業したばかりのベトナム初の地下鉄、ホーチミンシティメトロをテイスティングする。街を網羅する路線網が計画されているものの、これまでに開業したのはこの1号線のみ。建設資金はJICAを通じた基金によって援助され、建設は日本の建設コンサルタント企業が担当した。そして車両は日本の日立製。だからどこを見ても見慣れた感じがして、まるで日本の地下鉄の別バージョンに乗っているよう。

And this is familiar, too. “Chú ý”—“attention” in Vietnamese—sounds almost the same as “chu-i”—“attention” in Japanese. They say this similarity comes from the fact that both languages have some roots in Chinese.

こちらもなんとなく見慣れた感じがする。ベトナム語のAttention、つまり「注意」は「Chú ý（チューイー）」という言葉。ベトナム語も日本語もルーツの一部が中国語なのでこういうことが起こるらしい。
