EVENING COFFEE AT NARA HOTEL

An evening coffee at Nara Hotel, designed by Kingo Tatsuno, the architect of the red-brick Tokyo Station, along with Yasushi Kataoka, and opened in 1909—a year before my late grandfather was born. In the Meiji era, Nikko Kanaya Hotel and Fujiya Hotel were built in eastern Japan, while Nara Hotel was established in western Japan. Back then, Japan could build its own top-notch luxury hotels without relying on foreign brands.

奈良ホテルで夜のコーヒー。赤レンガの東京駅が代表作である辰野金吾が片岡安と一緒に手がけたこのホテルは、今は亡き僕の祖父が生まれる一年前の1909年にオープンした。東日本の日光金谷ホテルや富士屋ホテルも、西日本のここ奈良ホテルも明治生まれだが、その頃の日本は外資ブランドなどに頼らなくても、自分たちだけで最高級のラグジュアリーホテルを作ることができていた。
