JIYU ONGAKU GAKUEN ON FACEBOOK

Jiyu Ongaku Gakuen (Academy), a vocational school of music founded by my grandfather in 1946, ended its 66-year history this March. Some of their old photos are now archived with a detailed chronology on a dedicated Facebook page where you can retrace their footsteps. This is the school building in Nihonbashi Kakigaracho, built in 1965. I still have a faint memory of the Toden streetcars running along the street in front of it.

僕の祖父が1946年に創設した音楽の専門学校「自由音楽学園」が、この3月、66年の歴史に幕を下ろした。そこで学校の足跡をたどる専用のFacebookページが新たに作られ、年表と一緒に古い写真のアーカイブを見ることができるようになった。これは1965年に日本橋蛎殻町に建てられた校舎。学校の前の通りに都電が走っていたことを微かに憶えている。

The school was originally founded as a night school for working people right after WWII. Grandpa must have felt that people in the ravaged city needed music. My grandmother (piano), father (vocal), and uncle (vocal) also taught at the school.

そもそもこの学校は、第二次大戦終戦直後に勤労者のための夜学としてスタートした。荒廃した街の人々には音楽が必要だと祖父は考えたのだろう。祖母（ピアノ）も父（声楽）も叔父（声楽）も、この学校で教えていた。

1953年に作られた市谷校舎。僕は今でも市谷に住んでいる。
