THE TREASURES OF THE KINGDOM: THE DOUGLAS DC-3C

I walked inside the museum’s display hall and found another gem—the DC-3 used for the Saudi Royal Flight, a predecessor to their 707 jet. According to the builder’s plate onboard, this vintage bird, HZ-SAR1, was originally a military C-47B Skytrain, a.k.a. the Dakota, before being converted into the post-war civilian DC-3C and delivered to the Royal Saudi Air Force. It is always surprising to learn that more than 3,300 aircraft were built as the C-47B variant alone—twice as many as all Boeing 747s combined.

ミュージアムの建物の中に入っていたら、また別のお宝がいた。こちらは707ジェットの前任者にあたる、ロイヤルフライトで使われたDC-3。機内にある製造プレートによると、HZ-SAR1というレジを持つこのヴィンテージはもともと軍用のC-47B スカイトレイン a.k.a. ダコタだったが、戦後に民間用のDC-3Cに改修されて王立サウジ空軍に納入された。C-47Bというバリエーションだけでも3,300機以上、つまりすべてのボーイング747を合わせた数の倍以上作られたと知ると、ただ驚いてしまう。
