THE TREASURES OF THE KINGDOM: THE TRISTAR

I happened to find that Riyadh has an aviation museum and immediately ubered there. One of the main attractions and a gate guard of the air force museum, known as the Royal Saudi Air Force Museum, or the Saqr Al Jazeera Aviation Museum, is this commercial jet—HZ-AHP, a Lockheed L-1011-200 TriStar delivered to Saudi Arabian Airlines in 1980. It is so great to see that the same tri-jet as the one which took me to the sky for the first time in my life is still neatly preserved in the heart of Saudi Arabia’s capital. When it comes to the TriStar of Saudi Arabian Airlines, I can’t help but think about the accident of Flight 163. The brand-new L-1011 departed from Karachi and made a successful emergency landing in Riyadh after a fire broke out onboard. However, the failure to perform an emergency evacuation by the crew caused the loss of every life on the plane. The impact of this accident on the aviation industry was significant, and various measures were later introduced—including improvements in crew resource management—to ensure that a similar tragedy would not occur again.

リヤドに王立サウジ空軍博物館もしくはサクル・アルジャジーラ航空博物館と呼ばれる航空ミュージアムがあると知って、ただちにUberで向かった。ここは空軍の施設ではあるが、メインアトラクションの一つとして、1980年にサウジアラビア航空に導入されたロッキードL-1011-200 トライスター、HZ-AHPという民間ジェットが門番のような感じで展示されている。僕を生まれて初めて空の上へ連れて行ってくれた3発機と同じ機種が、サウジアラビアの首都の真ん中できちんと保存されているのはかなり嬉しい。そしてサウジアラビア航空のトライスターとなると、どうしても163便の事故を思い出してしまう。当時まだ新型だったL-1011を使用したカラチ発の163便は機内での火災発生後にリヤドへ緊急着陸することができたが、クルーが適切な緊急脱出手順を実施しなかったために機内の全員が犠牲になった。この事故が航空業界に与えたインパクトは大きく、同様の悲劇が再び起こらないよう、のちにクルーリソースマネージメントの改善を含め、様々な対策が導入された。
