RIDE THE BLACK CURRENT

Traveling back to Osaka from Wakayama Station, getting on JR West’s Kuroshio (meaning Black Current or Japan Current) limited express service. This train is operated with the 289 series EMU, converted from the 683-2000 series used for limited express services bound for the Hokuriku region, such as Shirasagi and Thunderbird. I like traditional train names using authentic Japanese words related to the region where the train runs. It feels much better than a strange English name like Thunderbird, which has nothing to do with Hokuriku.

和歌山駅でJR西日本の特急くろしおをつかまえて大阪へ戻る。この列車は、しらさぎやサンダーバードといった北陸地方へ向かう特急用の683系2000番台から改造された289系電車を使っている。黒潮という、その列車が走る土地とのつながりを感じる伝統的な日本語の列車名は良い。サンダーバードなどという北陸とはなんの関係もない奇妙な英語の列車名よりも、はるかに魅力的。

After a short trip, arrived at Tennoji station. Like the 683 series, the train also has a streamlined, wedge-shaped front car.

あっという間に天王寺駅に到着。683系と同様、先頭車には流線型のバージョンもある。
