LAKESIDE AND HAVERTHWAITE RAILWAY: OUTBOUND

Today I came to the Lake District in Cumbria. Following the one in the Cotswolds, I found another steam heritage railway and gave it a try. The route was originally opened by the Furness Railway in 1869, and after its closure by British Railways in 1965, it was revived and transformed into a heritage railway by enthusiasts. The engine used on my train is 2996, a tank locomotive named Victor, built by W. G. Bagnall in 1951. The carriage is the good old Mark 1. The train travels from Lakeside Station on Lake Windermere, along the River Leven flowing from it, to its terminus at Haverthwaite, a small village about 5.1 km away.

今日はカンブリアの湖水地方に来ている。コッツウォルズのものに続いて、ここでも蒸気機関車を使った保存鉄道を見つけたので試してみることにした。1869年にファーネス鉄道が敷設したこの路線は英国国鉄が1965年に廃止したが、のちに愛好家たちが保存鉄道として復活させた。今日乗る列車に使われているのはW. G. バグナル社が1951年に作ったヴィクターという名前のタンク機関車2996。客車は古き良きマーク1。列車はウィンダミア湖畔のレイクサイド駅を出発し、湖を水源とするリーヴン川に沿って5.1キロ先の小さな村、ヘイヴァースウェイトまで走る。
