FLEETWOOD AND THE NORTH EUSTON HOTEL

Do you recall a classic Cadillac car, or a British rock band, from the name? I came to a town called Fleetwood by tram from Blackpool. This community also faces the sea, like Blackpool, and once flourished with the fishing industry.

ブラックプールからトラムに乗って、クラシックなキャデラックかブリティッシュロックバンドを思い出させる名前を持つ街、フリートウッドへやってきた。ブラックプールと同様にここも海に面していて、かつては漁業で栄えていたらしい。

I found a nice-looking, fortress-like, semi-circular hotel where the River Wyre meets the sea, and decided to have lunch there. Interestingly, the North Euston Hotel, opened in 1841, was designed by the renowned British architect and landscaper Decimus Burton, whose portfolio includes Hyde Park, Green Park, and Regent’s Park in London. Burton was the mastermind behind Fleetwood’s town planning, and he created its key buildings, including this hotel positioned at the focal point of his plan.

ワイヤ川が海に流れこむあたりで要塞のような半円形の素晴らしいホテルを見つけたので、ランチをとることにした。名前はノースユーストンホテル。開業は1841年。興味深いことに、英国の著名な建築家＆造園家であるデシマス・バートンが設計したらしい。ロンドンのハイドパーク、グリーンパーク、そしてリージェンツパークも手がけたバートンはフリートウッドの都市計画を担当し、街の顔となるいくつかの建物もデザインした。その一つであるこのホテルは、プランの中心的な場所に置かれている。
