TWA HOTEL: THE CONNIE PART1

As iconic as the main Saarinen building, N8083H—the Lockheed Constellation “Connie” L-1649A Starliner sitting here—was originally built in 1958 for the Italian airline Linee Aeree Italiane, which merged with Alitalia, but was not taken by them and was instead sold to TWA. The Constellation was later converted into a freighter and remained in the TWA fleet until the early ’60s. After a twisted post-retirement life, N8083H was salvaged, restored, and brought to JFK to serve as the hotel’s cocktail lounge. It’s surprising how short her life was as a passenger airliner—due to the arrival of the jet age. And the TWA Flight Center—a.k.a. T5, now the TWA Hotel—emerged around the same time as a symbol of the new era.

サーリネンのメインビルディング同様にアイコニックなロッキード コンステレーション “コニー” L-1649Aスターライナー、レジ番号N8083H。この機はそもそも、のちにアリタリアと合併したイタリアのエアライン、リネア・アエレ・イタリアーネ（LAI）のために1958年に作られた。しかしLAIが引き取らなかったのでTWAに売られ、やがてフレイターに改修されて60年代はじめまでトランスワールドのフリートに残る。その後、紆余曲折ある余生を送っているうち、最終的に救い出されてリストアされ、ホテルのカクテルラウンジになるためにここへやってきた。N8083Hの旅客用エアライナーとしてのキャリアは驚くほど短い。不幸にしてジェットエイジの到来とほぼ同時に生まれてしまったのだから仕方がないだろう。そして今はTWAホテルになっているTWAフライトセンター、別名T5はその新時代の象徴だった。
