AROUND THE GA

Checking out Ga Hanoi—Hanoi Railway Station—even though I’m not taking a train today (it seems you need to be on it for more than 30 hours to get to Ho Chi Minh City). Both wings of the station building remain the original structure built in the 19th century by the French Indochina government. The central section was damaged during the Vietnam War and rebuilt with a modernist aesthetic.

列車に乗るわけではないのだが、ガ・ハノイ、つまりハノイ駅を見学する。どうやら列車で行くと、ホーチミンシティまで30時間以上かかるらしい。駅舎の両ウイングは19世紀に仏領インドシナ政府が建てたまま。真ん中部分はベトナム戦争で破壊され、モダニズムのテイストで再建された。

There is one more quite Soviet place near the Ga—the Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Cultural Palace. It was constructed as a gift from the USSR Central Council of Trade Unions and opened in 1985. I love its large overhanging roof and vertical lines.

ガの近くに、ソビエト感たっぷりな建物がもう一つある。ソビエト連邦労働組合中央評議会からベトナムへのプレゼントとして作られ、1985年にオープンしたベトナム・ソビエト友好文化宮殿。巨大な張り出し屋根と垂直の線がたまらない。
