MY PILGRIMAGE: FLYING HERITAGE COLLECTION

The next stop on my aviation pilgrimage around the Seattle area is the Flying Heritage Collection, located adjacent to the Boeing Everett plant. This treasure chest of warbirds is the private collection of Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. Remarkably, most of these vintage airplanes are preserved in flyable condition. There’s no other place on earth where you see a Messerschmitt Bf 109 take off next to a factory-fresh Boeing 787-8. Everett is truly the ultimate dreamland for aviation geeks.

シアトル周辺での航空巡礼。次の目的地はボーイング・エバレット工場の隣にある「フライングヘリテージコレクション」。この軍用機の宝箱はマイクロソフトの共同設立者であるポール・アレン氏のプライベートコレクションで、驚くべきことに集められたビンテージプレーンの多くがフライアブル、つまり飛行できる状態で保存されている。工場から出てきたばかりのボーイング787-8の隣でメッサーシュミットBf 109が離陸するのを見ることができるのは、地球上でここだけだろう。航空オタクにとって、エバレットは究極の夢の国。

From the United States: the North American P-51 Mustang. This plane always reminds me of the final scene in Saving Private Ryan.

まずはアメリカ合衆国から、ノースアメリカンP-51 ムスタング。この機を見るといつもプライベート・ライアンのラストシーンを思い出す。

From Great Britain: the Supermarine Spitfire Mk. Vc. Her heart is built by Rolls-Royce, just like those powering ANA’s Boeing 787s.

そして英国から、スーパーマリン・スピットファイアMk. Vc。この機の心臓は、ANAのボーイング787と同じくロールスロイス製。

From Germany: the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet. It looks like a toy, but it’s the only rocket-powered fighter aircraft ever to be put into operation.

次にドイツから、メッサーシュミットMe163 コメート。おもちゃのようだが、航空史上で唯一実用化されたロケット推進の戦闘機。

And from Japan: the Nakajima Army Type 1 Fighter “Hayabusa,” known to the Allies as “Oscar.” The Nakajima Aircraft Company was the predecessor of Subaru, a brand that remains popular here in the northwestern U.S.

最後に日本から、連合軍には「オスカー」と呼ばれていた中島の一式戦闘機「隼」。中島飛行機は、ここアメリカ北西部で人気があるブランド、スバルの前身。
