MY PILGRIMAGE: EVERETT

Starting my pilgrimage at The Boeing Everett Factory, located 25 miles north of Seattle. This is the birthplace of Boeing's wide-body jets such as the 747, 767, 777, and 787.

シアトルから北へ40キロ。ボーイングのエバレット工場から聖地巡礼を始める。ここは747、767、777、787といったボーイングのワイドボディジェットが生まれる場所。

I joined the factory tour that takes you inside the world’s largest building by volume, though photography isn’t allowed on the premises. This nose section of a 777, however, can be photographed from the parking lot.

エバレット工場は、容積としては世界最大の建築物として知られている。中を見せてくれるファクトリーツアーに参加したが、撮影は厳禁。この777の頭は駐車場から撮ったもの。

The Dreamlifter—officially known as the Boeing 747 Large Cargo Freighter—is resting at Paine Field Airport adjacent to the factory. This oversized giant, operated by Atlas Air, is used exclusively to transport 787 parts from suppliers around the world to Boeing’s plant, and it makes frequent visits to Chubu Centrair International Airport.

工場に隣接するペインフィールド空港で駐機中のドリームリフター、正式名ボーイング747ラージカーゴフレイター。アトラスエアが運航するこの太っちょは、世界各地のサプライヤーからボーイングの工場へ787の部品を運ぶためだけに使われていて、中部国際空港にもたびたび訪れる。

I found something special in a corner of Paine Field—N7001U, the very first 727 ever built. The shorter 727 has always been my favorite Boeing. I flew on it only once, aboard a flight operated by the now-defunct Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano, from La Paz, Bolivia to Cusco, Peru.

ペインフィールドの片隅で特別な1機を発見。N7001Uというレジを持つ727の1号機。短い方の727は僕が一番好きなボーイングだが、実際に乗ったのは一度だけ。今はなきロイドアエロボリビアーノのボリビア・ラパス発、ペルー・クスコ行きだった。
