AL SULAYMANIYAH - JEDDAH RAILWAY STATION

I knew that non-Muslims are not allowed to travel to Mecca. But just to be sure, I asked a front desk staff member at Park Hyatt Jeddah for his opinion. He said, “No… it’s difficult.” So I gave up and decided to go to the second holiest city in Islam—Medina. And here I am at Jeddah’s train station for HHR, the Haramain High Speed Railway, which looks like an airport terminal. The HHR, the Shinkansen of Saudi Arabia connecting the two sacred cities of Islam—Mecca and Medina—via Jeddah was inaugurated in 2018, and major stations, including this one, were designed by Foster + Partners.

非ムスリムはメッカに入ることができない。念の為パークハイアットジェッダのフロントデスクスタッフにきいてみたら、やはり「うーん、難しいですね」と言われてしまった。そこで代案としてイスラム第2の聖地メディナに向かうため、空港のターミナルのように見える、ハラマイン高速鉄道（HHR）のジェッダ駅にやってきた。メッカとメディナというイスラムの最重要聖地2つをジェッダ経由で結ぶサウジの新幹線HHRは2018年に開業し、この駅をはじめとする主要駅はフォスター・アンド・パートナーズが手がけている。
