AL-BALAD: DAY

What I see is a forest of mashrabiya (oriel windows and balconies enclosed with carved wooden latticework). It is traditional wisdom for living in a city where the highest temperature rises above 40°C (105°F) in summer. I have just stepped into a breathtaking labyrinth of Hijazi houses wrapped in an overdose of mashrabiyas. Thank you, HRH MbS, for preserving this gem for the future. The Al-Balad district is a treasure of the world, not just for Saudi Arabia.

目の前にあるのはマシュラビーヤの森。マシュラビーヤとは木彫りの格子細工で包まれた出窓＆バルコニーのことで、夏には気温が軽く40度を超える街で暮らすための伝統的な知恵。今からマシュラビーヤを載せまくったヒジャーズ建築が並ぶ、息をのむようなラビリンスに乗りこむ。MbS殿下、この宝物を未来のために保存してくれてありがとう。アル・バラド地区はサウジだけでなく、地球の宝。
