A METRO STATION BY ZAHA

The King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) metro station designed by Zaha Hadid Architects is one example that shows Saudi’s current momentum. The repeated motifs and shapes, inspired by sand patterns created by desert winds, weave womb-like interior spaces that look more like an art museum than a transportation facility. This architecture is a reminder of how disappointing it is that Tokyo missed the opportunity to have a stadium designed by Zaha—a testament to Japan having lost its momentum.

ザハ・ハディド・アーキテクツによるキングアブドラフィナンシャルディストリクト(KAFD)メトロステーションは、今のサウジが持つ勢いを語るものの一つ。砂漠の風が砂の上に作るパターンにインスパイアされたモチーフやシェイプを繰り返して生み出した胎内のような内部空間は、交通機関の施設というよりもミュージアムを思わせる。この駅を体験してしまうと、東京がザハのスタジアムを持つ機会を失ったのがかえすがえす残念でならない。日本という国はもはや勢いを失ったということなのだろう。
