GALAXY AND THE QUEEN

On final approach to LAX in the late afternoon light.

夕方の光の中、LAXへファイナルアプローチ。

A C-5 Galaxy is visiting LAX. Judging by her tail sign, she belongs to Travis Air Force Base, CA.

C-5ギャラクシーがLAXを訪問中。尾翼のサインから判断すると、カリフォルニアのトラビス空軍基地に所属する機体らしい。

When the U.S. Air Force called for proposals for a heavy jet transport, Lockheed’s concept won and became the C-5 Galaxy. Boeing’s design—with a raised cockpit—wasn’t chosen, but it later evolved into one of the most beautiful commercial airliners ever built: the Boeing 747. The 747 proved that a great idea can eventually change the game, even if it starts with failure. Glad to see the Queen of the Skies still active at LAX.

米空軍が大型ジェット輸送機の設計入札を行った際、ロッキードが提案したプランがC-5ギャラクシーとして採用された。ボーイングもコクピット部分だけを高くした案を提示したが選ばれず、後にそのデザインはこの美しい商用ジェット機、ボーイング747になった。優れたコンセプトは、たとえ最初に成功しなくても、結局すべての流れを変える。747はそれを証明してきた機体。空の女王がLAXでもまだ元気なのは嬉しい。
