ONAGAWA TOWN

Visited Onagawa, a neighboring town of Ishinomaki that was heavily damaged by the 2011 tsunami. The recovery is still a long way ahead, but the people working hard to rebuild the community are bringing new energy to the town.

石巻の隣りにある、311の津波で大きな被害を受けた女川町を訪問した。復興への道はまだ長いが、コミュニティの再建に向けて取り組みを続ける人たちが、この街で新しいエネルギーを生み出している。

This is the prefabricated studio of 79.3 MHz – Onagawa Saigai FM, a temporary community radio station. It was launched about a month after the tsunami to provide vital information to people who had lost almost every means of communication. Since then, the station — run by young residents of Onagawa, including high school students — has continued to connect people across the town through information and music.

コミュニティのための臨時放送局、「女川さいがいFM」のプレハブ製スタジオ。このFM局は、ほとんどすべてのコミュニケーション手段を奪われた住民に情報を伝えるため、津波の約1か月後に誕生した。それ以来、高校生を含む地元の若い世代によって放送が続けられ、情報と音楽で町の人たちをつなぎ続けている。

Takamasa, a sasa-kamaboko (bamboo-leaf-shaped fish cake) manufacturer and one of Onagawa’s leading companies, is another driving force behind the town’s recovery. Their brand-new store was bustling with tour groups eager to buy their products.

こちらも、女川の復興に向けたエネルギーの一つ。町を代表する企業である、笹蒲鉾の高政さん。真新しい店舗は、買い物をする団体客の熱気に包まれていた。
