CAFE HAMAGURI-DO PART1

This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen in Japan.

こんなに美しい場所を、僕はこれまで日本で見たことがない。

Kameyama-san, the owner of Café Hamaguri-do (“The House of Clams”), had been living in a nearly 100-year-old house in a small fishing village called Hamaguri Beach on the Oshika Peninsula near Ishinomaki. On March 11, 2011, this tiny village was devastated by the tsunami. The number of households dropped from nine to three, and he too left the village. But he couldn’t turn his back on the place filled with memories he cherished. So, with the help of volunteers who shared his vision, he launched a project to revive the village. As a first step, they renovated his home and turned it into a cafe named Hamaguri-do. They are now preparing to open a restaurant and an inn next to it, and even constructing a treehouse. The team’s ultimate dream is to bring the village back to life—as a community that attracts younger generations and connects people. This place is beautiful because it was created from the passion and prayer of one man, joined by the empathy of many others. When I visited, Hamaguri-do was filled with warm lights. I felt these lights were there to celebrate Kameyama-san’s determination. This is another Ishinomaki story.

カフェはまぐり堂のオーナーである亀山さんは、石巻に近い牡鹿半島・蛤浜の漁村にある築約100年の家に住んでいた。2011年3月11日、この小さな集落を津波が襲う。集落は壊滅的な状態になり、浜に暮らす世帯は9戸から3戸にまで減った。亀山さんも一度この土地を離れたが、大切な思い出でいっぱいの浜と決別することはできなかった。そこで彼は、サポートしてくれるボランティアの人たちと一緒に、集落を再生させるためのプロジェクトを開始する。最初の一歩として自らの生家をカフェに改装。はまぐり堂という名前をつけた。カフェの隣にレストランや宿をオープンさせる計画も進行中で、ツリーハウスも建てられている。チームの究極の夢は、この集落を若い世代にとって魅力的な、人々を結びつけるコミュニティに生まれ変わらせることだという。この場所がとても美しいのは、一人の人間の情熱と祈り、そして仲間たちによる彼への共感で作られているからだと思う。僕が訪れた日、はまぐり堂は暖かな光に包まれていた。その光はまるで、亀山さんの選択を祝福しているようだった。ここにもまた、もう一つの石巻の物語がある。
