ISHINOMAKI LABORATORY

Ishinomaki Laboratory is a community craft studio located in a building adjacent to IRORI Ishinomaki. It was founded by architect Keiji Ashizawa, with support from Herman Miller and other companies, as a place where local residents create wooden furniture designed by Tokyo-based architects.

石巻工房はIRORI石巻の隣にある建物に入っている市民工房。建築家の芦沢啓治氏によって創設され、ハーマンミラーをはじめとする企業のサポートを得たこの工房では、東京の建築家たちがデザインした木製家具を地元の人たちが手作りしている。

Their sophisticated wooden furniture has already found success, being installed in notable offices and stores. What they brought to the tsunami-affected areas are creative, forward-thinking ideas that help nurture a new local industry. Ishinomaki Laboratory is, in every sense, a builder of Ishinomaki’s future.
