IRORI ISHINOMAKI

When I was asked to come up with a name for a Wi-Fi–equipped shared office and cafe space in Ishinomaki, the word irori—the traditional Japanese fireplace—immediately came to mind. The irori is especially iconic in the traditional homes of the Tohoku region, where winters are long and harsh. It’s a place where families gather to talk, eat, and share their stories. The name also needed to feel modern, yet deeply connected to post-3.11 Ishinomaki, and I came to realize that irori could stand for Interaction Room of Revitalization and Innovation. Its symmetrical spelling also offered a nice bonus for the logo design. I hope IRORI Ishinomaki will become a new generation of irori—a place where people from around the world come together to exchange ideas and stories, and to envision the future of Ishinomaki City and beyond.

石巻にあるWi-Fi完備のシェアオフィス&カフェのネーミングを依頼されたとき、真っ先に思い出したのは囲炉裏だった。冬が厳しい東北地方の伝統的な家屋にとって象徴のような存在であり、家族みんなが集まり、おしゃべりや食事をして、物語を伝えていく場所。それが、囲炉裏。このネーミングには現代的な文脈やポスト311の石巻ならでは意味付けも大切だと思ったので、IRORIに「Interaction Room of Revitalization and Innovation（再生と革新のための交流の部屋）」という別の読み方も与えてみた。シンメトリーになるスペリングは、ロゴを開発する時にちょっとしたおまけになる。世界から人々が集い、アイデアと物語が交わされ、石巻の未来だけに留まらず様々な未来に広がっていく革新的なビジョンが生まれる新しい時代の囲炉裏になって欲しい。「IRORI石巻」という名前には、そんな願いを込めている。

Amazingly, they installed a real irori inside IRORI. This biz-cafe has become a popular local hub where people work, host events, play music, relax, and spark new possibilities for the community.

驚いたことにIRORIには本物の囲炉裏も作られていた。すでに地元の人気スポットとなったこのビズカフェでは、様々な人が仕事をしたり、イベントを開いたり、ライブをやったり、ただ何となく集まったりして、コミュニティの可能性に火をつけている。
