S21

Security Prison 21, a.k.a. S-21, once run by the Khmer Rouge, is now open to the public as the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. They say only eight people survived out of the 14,000–20,000 prisoners held there between 1975 and 1979. It’s hard to believe this happened after I was born. The site was originally built as a lycée—a place meant to nurture humanity. But it was ironically turned into one that destroyed it.

クメールルージュの重警備刑務所21、別名S21。現在はトゥール・スレン虐殺博物館として公開されている。1975年から1979年の間に投獄された1万4千人から2万人の中で、生存したのは8人だけだったという。僕が生まれた後にこのようなことがあったのが信じられない。ここはもともとリセとして建てられたのだが、人間性を育むための施設が人間性を破壊する場所へと変わったのは皮肉。
