AN UNDERGROUND AIRCRAFT FACTORY

While driving through Saitama Prefecture, I happened to stop at the ruins of Yoshimi Hyakketsu (“One Hundred Caves of Yoshimi”), where the Nakajima Aircraft Company—Asia’s largest aircraft manufacturer during World War II and the predecessor of Subaru—built an underground wartime factory. Today, visitors can walk through some of the remaining tunnels. In this bomb shelter, they were producing parts for warbirds.

埼玉をドライブ中、偶然「吉見百穴」の遺跡を通りかかった。ここは第二次大戦中、現在のスバルの前身で当時アジア最大の航空機メーカー、中島飛行機が航空機の地下工場を持っていた場所。今でもそのトンネルの一部を歩くことができる。空爆を避けるためのこの工場で航空機の部品が作られていた。

Above the shelter are countless burial caves from ancient times, which gave the site its name, “One Hundred Holes.” The coexistence of ancient human footsteps and a doomed warbird factory is a deeply ironic combination.

地下工場の上は、「百穴」の名の由来になった数えきれないほどの古代人の墳墓の穴。古代の人間の足跡と、絶望的な戦時の航空機工場。皮肉な組み合わせ。
