FLYING WITH A MEMORY OF SAINT-EXUPÉRY

A rare bird was waiting at the gate. My Air France flight today from Lisbon to CDG is operated by an ASL Airlines France 737-800. ASL France, formerly called Europe Airpost, was once a subsidiary of Air France operated as Société d'Exploitation Aéropostale. The airline’s history goes back to 1918 as Compagnie Générale Aéropostale—one of the predecessors of Air France—and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was one of their pilots. It is well known that his experience as an Aéropostale pilot is reflected on his landmark novel Night Flight. In 2008, Europe Airpost was acquired by ASL Aviation—a Dublin-based multinational aviation services group whose name stands for Airlines, Support, and Leasing—far less romantic than the world of Saint-Exupéry.

ゲートで珍鳥が待っていた。今日リスボンからCDGまで乗るエールフランス便は、ASL航空フランスの737-800で運航される。以前はヨーロッパエアポストと呼ばれていたASL航空フランスは、かつてソシエテ・エクスプロタシオン・アエロポスタルという名で運航されるエールフランスの子会社だった。エアラインの歴史は1918年までさかのぼり、アントワーヌ・ド・サン＝テグジュペリがパイロットとして所属していたエールフランスの母体の一つ、コンパニー・ジェネラル・アエロポスタルがその原点になっている。アエロポスタルで飛んでいたサン＝テグジュペリの経験が、彼の代表作である小説『夜間飛行』のベースになったことはよく知られている話だろう。2008年にヨーロッパエアポストは、ダブリンを本拠地とする多国籍航空サービス企業、ASLアビエーションに買収され今の名前になった。ちなみにASLはエアラインズ、サポート、リーシングの頭文字で、サン＝テグジュペリの世界と比べてかなりロマンチック度合いが減っている。
