A NORTHBOUND NIGHT TRAIN

Leaving for Ishionomaki. Tonight I take the Yamabiko bullet train to Sendai where I make an overnight stopover. Like last time, I get the whole carriage to myself all the way to the destination. The stillness inside the carriage feels just right for a night train heading for the northern land in midwinter.

石巻へ出発。今夜は新幹線やまびこで仙台へ行き、そこで一泊する。前回同様、終着駅の仙台までずっと、一車両まるごと貸し切り状態だった。完璧なまでに静かな車内は、真冬の北の地へ走る夜の列車にふさわしい。
