THE NINES

I chose The Nines as my base in Portland. This Starwood hotel occupies the iconic Meier & Frank Building, built in 1909, which once served as the flagship store and headquarters of Meier & Frank, an Oregon-based department store. Beneath the magnificent “beat-the-Hyatt” atrium, there’s still a Macy’s store — the successor to Meier & Frank after the acquisition. I was expecting a stronger Northwestern feel inside, but the room decor follows the familiar formula of today’s “hip, contemporary” hotels.

ポートランドでの基地にはザ・ナインズを選んだ。このスターウッド系ホテルが入っているのは1909年に建てられた街のシンボル「マイヤー＆フランクビル」で、かつてはオレゴン生まれのデパート「マイヤー＆フランク」の本店兼本社だった建物。ハイアットに対抗するかのような壮麗なアトリウムの階下では、マイヤー＆フランク社を買収したメイシーズのデパートが今も営業を続けている。部屋のインテリアは最近のヒップでコンテンポラリーなホテルによくありがちなスタイル。もうちょっとノースウエストっぽい雰囲気を期待していたのだが。
