PAINTING TO LIVE

This is a catalogue from the Painting to Live exhibition—a thoughtful gift from Dr. Jane Dulay, a psychiatrist and painter. based in Berkeley. The exhibition itself was held five years ago at the Institute of East Asian Studies, UC Berkeley, and explored Okinawa’s modernist art movement—as well as the deep friendship between local artists and American military physicians, nurtured during the years of U.S. occupation. Designed by Jane’s son, Jono, the catalogue beautifully captures the spirit of the exhibition while unfolding a piece of untold history.

バークレーに住む精神科医であり画家のジェーン・デュレイ医師から、ギフトとして「Painting to Live」展のカタログをいただいた。沖縄のモダンアートムーブメントと、米国占領下の時代に育まれた沖縄の画家たちと米軍医師たちとの間の深い友情をテーマにしたこの展覧会は、5年前にUCバークレーの東アジア研究所で開かれたもの。ジェーンさんの長男であるジョノがデザインしたこのカタログは、展覧会のユニークさを美しくまとめながら、これまで語れることのなかった歴史を伝えている。
