CORINTHIA HOTEL LONDON

Checked in at the about-one-year-old Corinthia—one of London’s newest five-star hotels. Originally built as the Metropole Hotel in the 19th century, the building became the Ministry of Defence before WWII and was later used as an office for the Defence Intelligence Staff. Last year, Malta-based Corinthia Hotels International brought it back into use as a hotel. It’s modern, but not too design-driven. Authentic, but not overly traditional. I like its stone’s-throw-from-Trafalgar location and the spacious layout of the guest-room entrance and bathroom. Above all, the very friendly doormen are fabulous.

できておよそ1年の、ロンドンで最も新しいファイブスターの一つであるコリンシアにチェックイン。そもそもこの建物は19世紀にメトロポールホテルとして建てられ、第二次大戦前には国防省になり、その後は国防情報参謀部のオフィスにもなったという。昨年、マルタを本拠地にするコリンシアホテルズインターナショナルが再びホテルとして生まれ変わらせた。モダンだが、「デザインデザイン」しすぎていない。オーセンティックだが、伝統を主張しすぎてはいない。目と鼻の先にトラファルガーがあるロケーション、広々とした客室エントランスとバスルームのレイアウト、そして何より、ものすごくフレンドリーなドアマンの皆さんが素晴らしい。
