A CHEYENNE IN OSAKA

As a special treat for the author writing a novel about their historic aircraft Nippon-Go, the Aviation Department of The Mainichi Newspapers invited Ms. Maha Harada on an exclusive flight aboard their corporate plane, Phoenix II, departing from the company’s own hangar at Osaka Itami Airport. Harada-san’s editor, Yanagi-san of The Mainichi Newspapers, and I also joined this gorgeous flight over the Kansai skies.

毎日新聞社の歴史的な航空機「ニッポン号」の小説を書いている作家への特別なはからいとして、同社航空部が原田マハさんを社有機「フェニクス II 」の特別飛行へご招待。毎日が大阪伊丹空港に持つハンガーから出発することになった。毎日新聞社の原田さん担当編集者である柳さん、そして僕もこの関西上空のゴージャスなツアーに参加させてもらう。

The Phoenix II is a Piper Cheyenne—one of only two Cheyennes in Japan. The other, owned by Nippon Aerotech in Chofu, happened to be in the hangar when we filmed my Flightman movie there.

「フェニックス II 」の機体はパイパー・シャイアン。これは日本で2機しかないシャイアンの1機。もう1機は偶然にも、僕の映画「フライトマン」を調布で撮影する際にハンガーの中にいた日本エアロテックの機体。

これは大阪エリアのターミナルコントロールエリアのチャート。機長の藤田さんとパイロットの安西さんは「今日は皆さんが行きたいところどこでも飛びますよ」と言ってくれた。これまでのすべての航空体験の中で、コクピットクルーからこんな言葉を聞いたことはない。
