A FLYING LEGEND

With Mr. Jun Takahashi, Honorary Chairman of the Japan Flying Association. Born in Tokyo in 1922, Mr. Takahashi joined the Imperial Japanese Navy as a pilot and flew the G3M “Nell,” the military version of the Nippon-Go, as well as the famous G4M “Betty.” He told us that the G3M was nice and easy to handle. After World War II, he turned down a job offer from the Northwest-controlled Japan Airlines and instead founded the Japan Flying Club to nurture a new generation of Japanese aviators under peaceful skies. Now, at 85 years old, he still flies once a week—the oldest active pilot in Japan, with more than 24,500 flight hours. He has also modeled for fashion brands such as Comme des Garçons and Paul Stuart. I was deeply honored to have dinner with him and listen to his extraordinary stories of the sky.

日本飛行連盟名誉会長の高橋淳さんと。氏は1922年に東京に生まれ、大日本帝国海軍にパイロットとして入隊。ニッポン号の軍用バージョンである九六式陸上攻撃機と、有名な一式陸上攻撃機を飛ばしていた。高橋さん曰く、九六式は実に扱いやすく、良い機体だったとのこと。戦後はノースウエスト航空のコントロール下に置かれた日本航空からのオファーを断り、平和な空で日本の飛行家を育てるために日本飛行クラブを設立。現在は85歳で、24,500時間以上の飛行時間を持つ日本最高齢の現役パイロットとしていまだに週に一度飛び続けている。さらに氏は、コムデギャルソンやポールスチュアートといったブランドのファッションモデルをした経験もある。数々の驚くべき空の物語を伺いながらディナーをご一緒できたのは、この上なく光栄なこと。
