2ND RTW 16: HONG KONG-NARITA

At my request, the JAL gate agent changed my seat to one without a seatmate just minutes before boarding. Ending my round-the-world trip with Japanese hospitality isn’t bad at all. However, as so often in a JAL cabin, a middle-aged Japanese man began ranting at a flight attendant, slowing down the entire service. Once, a Korean-American colleague from Wieden+Kennedy Portland told me she didn’t like Korean Air because of its arrogant passengers. As a Japanese flyer, I feel the same about my country’s national carrier and some of its passengers. I know the airline itself is trying hard to improve, but still…

リクエストを出しておいたので、JALのゲート担当がボーディング開始直前に隣が空いている席に換えてくれた。日本らしいホスピタリティの中で世界一周を終われるのは悪くない。でもJALのキャビンではいつものことながら、一人の日本人中年男性客がキャビンアテンダントを叱り続けていた。結果、キャビンサービスが全体的に遅れ気味になる。以前ワイデン+ケネディ ポートランドにいる韓国系アメリカ人の同僚が「コリアンエアは乗客が最低だから好きじゃない」と言っていたが、僕は日本人フライヤーとして同じ印象をこの日本のナショナルフラッグキャリアとその乗客に持っている。エアライン自体は頑張っていることを知ってはいるけれど・・・

A Chinese New Year gift from JAL—a five-yen coin included. In Japanese, the sound “go-en” (five yen) also means an “inseparable bond” between two people. JAL may indeed need a stronger bond with its customers as competition in the airline industry intensifies. This flight marks the final leg of my 16-flight journey around the world. I’ve flown a total of 50,088 miles—the equivalent of more than four round trips between Narita and Los Angeles—and enjoyed twenty in-flight meals. Time to go on a diet. JAL B747-400 HKG-NRT. The 460th flight in my lifetime.
